Released On: May 12, 2010

BD Construction, Inc., of Kearney, Nebraska, one of the Midwest’s leading construction companies, has begun construction on the expansion of Superior Public Schools, located in Superior, Nebraska. This 44,000-square-foot development includes an elementary school addition that will be physically attached to the east side of the present high school.

Currently, there are two elementary schools in Superior. The passage of the $8 million bond issue in November of 2009 included combining the two elementary schools into one. The location for the new elementary school will be added on to the current high school building, creating one building for all students. Superior Public Schools turned to BD Construction to take on this project due to their quality work, creative design and experience with project management on this scope and scale. The new addition will include 17 classrooms, a computer laboratory and library, administrative and faculty offices and a gymnasium.

“The new facility will allow for more efficiency in staff time and overall energy competence. The existing elementary buildings currently do not have air conditioning. We plan to add air conditioning, allowing for greater flexibility in the calendar scheduling,” stated Superior Public Schools Superintendent, Charles Isom. “The community has been extremely supportive of the school and the bond issue, this entire process really, and we are eager to see the finished product.”

At this time, elementary school students are bused to a different facility to have their lunch, separate from where they attend class. With BD Construction’s craftsmanship, the completion of this project will include a cafeteria for all students, K-12.

BD Construction will work to ensure each room is wired for technology. They will also complete some renovations at the high school, which involve adding more storage and upgrading life safety codes. Completion of this project is set to be finished by the summer of 2011.

“It is evident this expansion will be very useful for Superior Public Schools, who are in great need,” stated Mark Benjamin, president and CEO of BD Construction. “Once this development is complete, there will be more space, and that will in turn, result in better accommodations of students and the community as a whole.”
