Released On: October 13, 2010
BD Construction of Kearney, Nebraska, one of the Midwest's leading construction companies, has begun work on Rawlins County Hospital, located in Atwood, Kansas. Upon completion, which is scheduled for the spring of 2012, this project will include a remodel and expansion of the current hospital, adding a total of 15,100 square feet.
“We are very excited for this project to begin. It's no longer a dream, but now a reality that has been several years in the making," stated Rawlins County Hospital CEO, Deanna Freeman. "Many people, including BD Construction, have worked very hard to help make this happen.”
Two areas of the hospital will undergo construction. The first, a 2,900-square-foot addition, will consist of a new physical therapy and cardiac rehabilitation center. This space will include a gymnasium, offices and treatment rooms, as well as a 1,200-square-foot patient education meeting room.
The second part of the remodel consists of a 12,200-square-foot addition and 10,316- square-foot renovation. An emergency room (ER), ER garage and patient wing make up the square footage of this expansion. The ER will be comprised of two trauma rooms, an overflow area and one isolation exam room. Ten new rooms for patients will be added to the patient wing including a hospice suite and a variety of single, double and family occupancy rooms.
The existing laboratory will triple in size after BD Construction relocates and renovates the imaging and radiology area, which will centralize the space into one. A current patient wing will become a specialty clinic for visiting doctors and about 25 percent of the space will be converted into administrative offices. Partial funding for the project is made possible by the USDA and Security State Bank of Kansas City.
“We are always looking for ways to improve the quality of care for our patients,” Freeman said. “They deserve to have access to quality healthcare and this project means a lot to the community and residents of northwest Kansas.”
The hospital remodel will allow for expansion of outpatient and specialty services. The new patient wing will be wired for up-to-date technology and many of the renovations will bring the hospital up to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and American Disabilities Association (ADA) code standards.
“There have been many years of planning and preparation put into the construction of this project in order to ensure everything is done correctly and to utilize the existing space to better accommodate hospital patients, their families and all hospital staff,” stated BD Construction President, Mark Benjamin. "The remodel and expansion will be a very nice addition for the community.”
