Kearney, NE–Eighth graders at Horizon Middle School moved into new classrooms today and office staff moved into their newly remodeled administrative areas.
This continues Phase 4 of BD Construction’s work on the Horizon Middle School expansion and renovation project, part of the bond that voters approved that includes a new high school and an addition to Sunrise Middle School. At Horizon, students and teachers now have ten classrooms and a dedicated hallway with new student lockers. The new classroom space includes two dedicated science labs in each grade-level pod. By including the science rooms in each grade level, existing shared science labs were eliminated, thereby creating space for four additional classrooms in the building. The classrooms that were added on to the building were constructed as hardened spaces for shelter during storms, and can house all of the students. In addition, the entire building will be protected by fire sprinklers when the project is complete. Previously, the building had no fire sprinklers installed.
The sixth grade classrooms had been updated over the summer, and seventh grade classrooms were complete before Winter Break.
The next phase of construction will include updating the shop and art classrooms. Over the summer, ceilings and main hallways will be renovated, and air conditioning will be added to the gyms and locker rooms.
